5 Disaster Medicine Specialist Track
Prepares physicians and emergency medical services professionals in emergency and trauma medicine to function in multidisciplinary teams and work in field medicine functions. Participants treat and extricate simulated patients with severe injuries while working in extremely confined spaces with limited accessibility and under highly stressful conditions. Selected topics include confined space medicine, crush syndrome, blast injuries, WMD medical problems, victim injuries, canine field medicine.
Phase I
Classroom instruction will be three days, October 15–17, 8 a.m.–6 p.m.; at KU School of Medicine, Wichita campus, 1010 N. Kansas, Wichita, Kan. This phase will center on intense hands–on classroom training using lifelike simulations to prepare participants for deployment operations of the next phase. Classroom hours: up to 24 CME hours and 24 EMS hours after classroom hours.
Phase II
Deployment to full-scale mass casualty/collapse structure simulation will start on the morning of October 19 and continue the morning of October 21. Execution will entail 12- to 24–hour shifts. Participants will be advised of location of collapse sites and dates and times to report for duty on the first day of training instruction of Phase I. Credit will be given based on hours of actual participation. Deployment hours: up to 24 CME hours and 24 EMS hours.
Accreditation. This activity has been approved for up to 48 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ and up to 48 hours EMS credit. (Please see Accreditation.) Specific objectives and timed agendas will follow in confirmation letters to participants.
